Winch and Clutch Problems

Kit-E154: Winch and Clutch Problems

With the Bimini Hard Top up, it was time to use that shade to start reconfiguring the line handling area. We discovered a problem in the original design and had to work out a new solution, and redo that section of the boat!

Kit-E153: Schionning Build Progress

It was finally time to mount the newly built Bimini hard top onto our Schionning Solitaire 1520, permanently! We worked on the main sail track and then returned it and the Stainless steel flat bar support to Garhauer for work.

Alexseal to the Rescue

Kit-E152: Alexseal to the Rescue

We tested out a new way to fair our flat panels that saves us a lot of work, by using Alexseal Super Primer. Later, the weather improved, giving us morning cloud cover, so we switched gears to paint the Top Deck instead.

Bimini Construction

Kit-E151: Bimini Construction

We made a lot of progress building our Bimini for over the Helm and Line handling station, finally getting to fairing the legs and the entire top. We also got back to sanding on the Salon ceiling. Plus, we answered Viewer questions!

Overhead Weather Protection

This week was all about hard tops, with us starting to bond the supports for the Helm Hardtop, and beginning work on the Helm Hardtop itself. We also got more work done sanding the salon ceiling.

Helm and Top Deck Supports

We spent a lot of the week building supports to hold up the rear of the top deck and also got work done on getting our helm hard top up. Marianne and Phil also go over the salon layout and, specifically, the galley.

A Hard Week of Boat Building!

Brian and Phil got to work tackling a bunch of projects on the boat, including getting back to work on the two dagger boards. They ended the week doing one of the harder jobs left, fairing and sanding the ceiling in the salon.

Cockpit Construction Continues

Kit-E147: Cockpit Construction Continues

With the Admiral getting better, it was time to get our concentration back on boat building. We got to work on finishing up the cockpit furniture including the Bench/Recliner and the stern Starboard cupboard.

Admiral Hospitalized

Kit-E146: Admiral Hospitalized

The goal this week was to get all the sole extensions in so that we can start building the furniture. And, it was Christmas, so we took a couple of days off, but we still made our goal... and S/V Lynx got a Christmas present!

Helm Seat Installed and More

Kit-E145: Helm Seat Installed and More!

We were hard at it this week and really went to town and got a lot of projects done, including mounting in the Helm Seat, and a lot of work on the galley arm where the two refrigerator/freezers and the TV are mounted.

Galley and Helm Steps Progress

Kit-E144: Galley and Helm Steps Progress

With the Admiral off from one of her jobs supporting the building of S/V Lynx, she has more hours to work on the boat. So, we put her to work as we got more progress on the Helm Stairs and the Galley Arm.

Customizing the Kit

Kit-E143: Customizing the Kit

This week we did lots of customizing as we worked on the boat! We're closing in on making the Galley Arm and Helm Seat this week, plus we get a major shipment of a very cool piece of technology for S/V Lynx.

Lots of Boat Building Progress

Kit-E142: Lots of Boat Building Progress

We continue work on the helm seat and stairs, and finish up the second coat of fairing compound on the top deck. Things are moving along swiftly as we make progress toward setting sail around the planet.

Raised Helm Construction

Kit-E141: Raised Helm Construction

This week, we are working hard on the boat again. We start the next coat of fairing on the Top Deck and start building the helm station bench and steering console. We made lots of good progress on S/V Lynx!

Overhead Fairing and Sanding

Kit-E140: Overhead Fairing and Sanding

With the weather cooperating, we made up for lost time and got a ton of work done on S/V Lynx! Those pesky mullions are a thing of the past and by the end of the week, we were even fairing the ceiling of the top deck!

Mullions Finished

Kit-E139: Mullions Finished!

With the weather now cooperating, we made up for lost time and got a ton of work done on S/V Lynx! Those pesky mullions are a thing of the past and by the end of the week, we were even fairing the ceiling of the top deck!

Trying to Build Our Boat

Kit-E138: Trying to Build Our Boat

It was a crazy week! Weather whiplash hit us, but we made the best we could of the days to get some progress on the boat, and we took the time to answer some viewer questions when we couldn't work on the boat.

Choosing Our Alexseal Paint Color

Kit-E137: Choosing Our Alexseal Paint Color

Lots of boat work this week, including when we start glassing in the mullions. Then, we take a field trip to Newport Beach Harbor to try and find the right color of Alexseal 501 paint for S/V Lynx!

Monster Fairing Job Begins

Kit-E136: Monster Fairing Job Begins

We had two plans this week, if the sun was shining, work inside the salon on the mullions, if we got an overcast day, attack the big job of fairing the top deck... we got both!  So we got to work!

Top Deck Construction

Kit-E135: Top Deck Construction

Weather changed again... so we did too! We got to work on the Top Deck, fixing the water catchment system and sanded for fairing... then the weather switched again, so we changed course, again!

Bilges, Boards, & Bunk

Kit-E134: Time to Change Plans

We set out to add the support mullions to the salon windows but then we ran into an issue when we tried to put in the vent tubes.  So we switched gears and made a new plan, then got to work getting it done!

Windows At Last!

Kit-E133: Windows At Last!

It's time to finish cutting out all the salon windows to reveal our panoramic view for seeing the world during our planned double circumnavigation voyage, hopefully starting in 2026!

Cutting Windows, a Scary Job!

Kit-E132: Cutting Windows... a Scary Job!

It was time to tackle the front windows in the salon, so we worked on the side window baseboards, then got to the scary job of cutting giant holes in our boat! But, all's well that ends well!

Laminating the Cabin Top

Kit-E131: Laminating the Cabin Top

This week it was time for a Big Crew Saturday job laminating the cabin top. We also got a lot of work done on the side window epoxy ropes, and started work on finishing the day bed in the cockpit.

Window Work Woes

Making Window Mullions

Kit-E129: Making Window Mullions

S/V Lynx needs strong supports for our nice large windows in the salon, so this week we worked on adding epoxy rope to the edges and started cutting and gluing the mullions together.

Fixing the Latest Problem

Kit-E128: Fixing the Latest Problem

This week we tackled a large problem with our window cutouts and got past that with a new solution using a jig and some forms. We also worked on finishing up the last of the cockpit sole.

Cockpit Bench and Ceiling!

Kit-E127: Cockpit Bench and Ceiling!

Now that we are held up by the window alignment issue and waiting on responses from Goiot and Schionning, we decided to stop work in that area and get to work on the Cockpit rear bench and ceiling.

Our Windows Don't Fit

Kit-E126: Our Windows Don't Fit!

We discovered a problem! We were test fitting the acrylic windows and found out something is wrong! But, we got lots of other work done on S/V Lynx this week, so it wasn't a complete loss.

Could this be Harder?

Kit-E125: Could this be Harder?

Building a boat outdoors comes with some challenges. But, with enough tarps and some other work, we came through the rain and still got a lot of boat work done, including starting to get the cabin top ready to be  glued down.

Redesigning the Boat

Kit-E124: Redesigning the Boat

While working on the Cockpit and Interior furniture, we're making a lot of design changes to make the boat more comfortable, safer, faster to build, and to get more use out of spaces.

Cockpit Customizing

Kit-E123: Cockpit Customizing

We're hard at work on the cockpit table bench and stern bench this week. We also take time to dry fit out the Nav Station and make some modifications to that design. Finally, we start kerfing the corners of the stern bench.

3D Plumbing and Boat Work

Kit-E122: 3D Plumbing and Boat Work

We get to work by modeling a 3D version of our bilge and plumbing beneath the head area, then get to work on tabbing in the port deck to the hull side and starting to glue in the Cockpit table seating.

Bilges, Boards, & Bunk

Kit-E121: Bilges, Boards, & Bunk

It was a hard week due to the bad wind conditions and major fires in LA!  See how we faired in this video, and all the work we got done on the bilge area.  We also work on a dagger board and add a new fold up bunk.
